World War 2 - private tour by car in Warsaw

 Tour plan

3-hour World War 2 tour of Warsaw by car

Discover how World War II shaped Warsaw during this comprehensive 3-hour private tour by car. You will be picked up directly from your hotel and guided through the most significant wartime sites, gaining a deeper understanding of the city’s heroic and tragic past.

In the Old Town, you’ll admire the beautifully rebuilt Royal Castle, which was heavily bombarded by German forces on September 17, 1939. This attack marked a profound loss, as the castle symbolized Polish sovereignty and served as the seat of the President of Poland. The cannonade also set fire to the roof of St. John’s Archcathedral, another iconic landmark you’ll see.

You’ll uncover the story of the Siege of Warsaw, fought fiercely between the Polish Warsaw Army and the invading German forces, and learn how the Old Town became a battleground again during the Warsaw Uprising. The scars of these battles are still visible in the city’s architecture and memorials.

Driving down the historic Royal Route, once the main communication route leading south from the Old Town, you’ll follow the path of history to the Warsaw Uprising Monument at Krasiński Square, which stands as a powerful tribute to the bravery of the Insurgents.

This extended tour also includes key World War II sites beyond the Old Town. You will stop to see the preserved fragments of the Ghetto Wall, symbolic relics of the Warsaw Ghetto; some of their bricks have been sent to Jewish museums around the world, including in the USA and Australia. Another poignant stop is the Pawiak Prison, once part of the Warsaw concentration camp, where the brutal wartime repression reached horrifying levels — especially during the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising.

5-hour World War 2 tour of Warsaw by car

This extended 5-hour tour covers all the key World War II landmarks included in the 3-hour tour — such as the Royal Castle, St. John’s Archcathedral, the Warsaw Uprising Monument, the Ghetto Wall fragments, and Pawiak Prison — and is further enriched by an in-depth exploration of the Praga district.

Located on the right bank of the Vistula River, Praga was a silent witness to the destruction and upheaval of World War II. Unlike much of central Warsaw, Praga retains many of its original pre-war buildings, as only about 25% of its architecture was destroyed during the conflict. Here, you’ll see bullet marks on building facades and other authentic traces of the war that still scar the neighborhood today.

Praga also played a significant role during the first three days of the Warsaw Uprising in 1944, when strategic sites such as the Wileński Train Station and the Schicht Factory were seized by the Insurgents. Adding to its historical significance, the district served as a filming location for Roman Polanski’s acclaimed 2002 movie The Pianist, thanks to its well-preserved wartime appearance.

A Remarkable and Deeply Moving Journey Through Poland’s History – Expertly Guided & Organized

This was our first time in Poland, planned around the Iron Maiden concert in Warsaw, and we wanted to experience as much WWII history as possible. From start to finish, our journey with AB Poland Travel was unforgettable. Thanks to Magda and Zuzanna’s outstanding coordination, every detail—from hotel bookings to taxi transfers—and daily schedules.

Each guide brought their own expertise and passion. Jurek and Jacek took us through Lublin, Majda nek, and Sobibór, weaving personal stories and deep historical insight into an emotional, humbling day. Wojtek led us to the Wolf’s Lair and Mamerki with an academic’s precision. Paweł brought Warsaw’s history alive, from the Old Town to local hangouts, Warsaw Ghetto sites, and later guided us through Treblinka and the Białowieża forest. Even our long day to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Kraków with Jacek was expertly managed—an intense, meaningful experience.

Behind the scenes, Magda and the office team were incredible—quick to respond, flexible with adjustments, and genuinely committed to making our trip special.
