A Remarkable and Deeply Moving Journey Through Poland’s History – Expertly Guided & Organized

This was our first time in Poland, planned around the Iron Maiden concert in Warsaw, and we wanted to experience as much WWII history as possible. From start to finish, our journey with AB Poland Travel was unforgettable. Thanks to Magda and Zuzanna’s outstanding coordination, every detail—from hotel bookings to taxi transfers—and daily schedules.

Each guide brought their own expertise and passion. Jurek and Jacek took us through Lublin, Majda nek, and Sobibór, weaving personal stories and deep historical insight into an emotional, humbling day. Wojtek led us to the Wolf’s Lair and Mamerki with an academic’s precision. Paweł brought Warsaw’s history alive, from the Old Town to local hangouts, Warsaw Ghetto sites, and later guided us through Treblinka and the Białowieża forest. Even our long day to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Kraków with Jacek was expertly managed—an intense, meaningful experience.

Behind the scenes, Magda and the office team were incredible—quick to respond, flexible with adjustments, and genuinely committed to making our trip special.

 Info

The Ostróda–Elbląg Canal, commonly known as the Elbląg Canal, is a unique waterway connecting the lakes of western Masuria with the Vistula Lagoon. What makes the canal exceptional is the way it overcomes a 100-meter difference in water levels, which occurs naturally in this region.

Instead of using traditional locks, the canal employs a system of five inclined planes: Buczyniec, Kąty, Oleśnica, Jelenie, and Całuny. These ingenious mechanisms are rail-based hauling systems powered by the force of flowing water. Boats are lifted onto special platforms and transported over land along tracks—creating the unforgettable experience of vessels literally “sailing on grass.”

Thanks to this remarkable engineering solution, the Elbląg Canal still operates today using 19th-century technology, making it one of the most unique hydraulic engineering monuments in the world.

A cruise along the canal allows visitors to experience this technical wonder firsthand. During the journey, guests can witness the operation of the inclined planes while enjoying the peaceful scenery of lakes, forests, fields, and abundant water birdlife. Each cruise offers a perfect combination of engineering heritage and the natural beauty of western Masuria.

 Tour plan

The tour begins with a morning departure from Warsaw and a comfortable drive to Buczyniec, the heart of the Elbląg Canal system.

The 3-hour cruise starts and ends in Buczyniec, where the Elbląg Canal History Chamber is located. During the journey, the vessel travels along the canal and passes through the inclined planes of Buczyniec, Kąty, and Oleśnica.

The ship descends the slopes at the beginning of the cruise and climbs them again on the return journey, crossing the inclined planes six times in total. This creates an unforgettable opportunity to observe the operation of these unique hydrotechnical mechanisms up close, while also enjoying beautiful landscapes and excellent photo opportunities.

During the entire journey along the Elbląg Canal, passengers are accompanied by commentary from the ship’s captain. On board, guests can also purchase hot and cold drinks from the buffet.

After the cruise, there will be free time for lunch at the tavern located by the Buczyniec inclined plane (meal at your own expense) before beginning the return journey to Warsaw.

The entire tour lasts approximately 10 hours.

There is also a possibility to extend the tour with additional attractions, such as the Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek, the Grunwald Battle Museum, or Malbork Castle — please see the "Extensions" section below for more details.

Museum of Folk Architecture – Ethnographic Park in Olsztynek
This open-air museum presents traditional rural life of northern Poland. Around 80 historic buildings from Warmia, Masuria, Powiśle and former East Prussia have been carefully reconstructed here, including farmhouses, churches, barns and small industrial buildings. The interiors display authentic tools, furniture and objects illustrating everyday life, traditional crafts and rural customs from the 19th and early 20th centuries. The museum’s collection of material culture and folk art includes over 14,000 exhibits.

Grunwald Battle Museum (Muzeum Bitwy pod Grunwaldem)
Located near the historic battlefield in Stębark, this modern museum commemorates the famous Battle of Grunwald (1410), one of the most important battles in medieval Europe. The new museum building, opened in 2022, features around 1,300 m² of exhibition space. Visitors can explore the permanent exhibition “The Great War with the Teutonic Order 1409–1411”, which combines multimedia presentations with archaeological artifacts and reconstructions of medieval weapons, armor and equipment. The visit also includes a short film excerpt depicting the Battle of Grunwald.

Malbork Castle
The town of Malbork, located in the Vistula Delta, is home to the largest brick castle in the world. Built in the 13th century by the Teutonic Knights, the castle served as the headquarters of the Order. During the visit, you can explore impressive parts of the complex such as the High Castle cloisters, courtyards, the Summer Refectory and the Grand Master’s Palace. The interiors display valuable collections including medieval weapons, documents and exquisite amber artworks. The castle is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is considered one of the most impressive medieval fortresses in Europe.
