Chełmno (Kulmhof) Death Camp tour from Warsaw
Visit the site of the first Nazi extermination camp established during World War II. This one-day tour from Warsaw takes you to Chełmno nad Nerem, where you will explore the former camp grounds and the Rzuchów Forest — the location of mass graves. Learn about the tragic history of the camp, where at least 150,000 people were murdered using gas vans.
Info
Join us on a full-day historical journey from Warsaw to the Museum of the Former German Kulmhof Death Camp in Chełmno on Ner, one of the most important and lesser-known Holocaust sites in Poland.
During the tour, you will visit two main parts of the former camp:
At the museum, you will learn about the history of the camp, the victims, and the methods used by Nazi Germany in the early stages of the Holocaust. The site is preserved as a place of remembrance, offering a powerful and reflective experience.
The “Rzuchów Forest Educational Path” guides visitors through four designated sections of the former Kulmhof camp site, identified during archaeological work carried out over several seasons.
Three of these sections form part of the original extermination area in the Rzuchów Forest, where the so-called forest camp (Waldlager) operated during the German occupation.
Along the path, visitors can follow the history of the site through informational boards in English, which explain the chronology of the mass graves where victims’ bodies were buried.

Chełmno (Kulmhof) was the first Nazi extermination camp, established in December 1941 and created solely for the purpose of mass murder. It was created for the immediate extermination of Jews, mainly using gas vans, and played a key role in the early phase of the “Final Solution,” and at least 150,000 people — mainly Jews from central Poland — were killed there.
The camp operated in two periods: from 1941 to 1943 and again in 1944–1945. Victims were murdered in the village of Chełmno, and their bodies were transported to the nearby Rzuchów Forest, where they were buried or later burned in mass graves.
Initially, victims came from nearby ghettos, followed by Jews from the Łódź ghetto and deportees from Western Europe. In 1944, the camp resumed operations briefly, with further transports from Łódź.
Before the end of the war, the Germans attempted to destroy evidence of the crimes. In January 1945, the remaining prisoners were executed.
It is estimated that around 200,000 people were murdered at Chełmno.

A Remarkable and Deeply Moving Journey Through Poland’s History – Expertly Guided & Organized
This was our first time in Poland, planned around the Iron Maiden concert in Warsaw, and we wanted to experience as much WWII history as possible. From start to finish, our journey with AB Poland Travel was unforgettable. Thanks to Magda and Zuzanna’s outstanding coordination, every detail—from hotel bookings to taxi transfers—and daily schedules.
Each guide brought their own expertise and passion. Jurek and Jacek took us through Lublin, Majda nek, and Sobibór, weaving personal stories and deep historical insight into an emotional, humbling day. Wojtek led us to the Wolf’s Lair and Mamerki with an academic’s precision. Paweł brought Warsaw’s history alive, from the Old Town to local hangouts, Warsaw Ghetto sites, and later guided us through Treblinka and the Białowieża forest. Even our long day to Auschwitz-Birkenau and Kraków with Jacek was expertly managed—an intense, meaningful experience.
Behind the scenes, Magda and the office team were incredible—quick to respond, flexible with adjustments, and genuinely committed to making our trip special. ... [read more]
